Christ Saves The Men From Their Fish

September 30, 2020

You're probably wondering what on earth that title means, and let's just say that that experience gave me a good laugh.

Hermana Selman was pouring her heart out in a testimony of Jesus Christ to a friend we were teaching when I heard the word "pescado". Now I don't know much spanish, but I perked up because that definitely means fish. I, of course, trust my companion fully and just quietly thought in my head, "Where on earth was she going with that??"

Thanks to some kind advice from our teacher after said lesson, we realized that as she was trying to bear testimony that, "Jesus Christ saves mankind from their sins", she instead testified that, "Jesus Christ saves the men from their fish".

We're learning the hard way that some words in spanish have very different meanings with just a single letter difference <3 (pescado = fish, pecado = sin)

This week has been full of laughter, bonding, and of course a ton of spiritual growth.
My district has made learning spanish and more about the gospel an absolute joy. Each person has gone through such different experiences and it makes for really enriching classes to hear all the perspectives.

My comp and I are literally two peas in a pod and she also has the same dream of getting a registered mini aussie to breed and sell the puppies after the mission??? Not only is she super smart, spiritual, and motivated, but she also LOVES dogs as much as I do! What a tender mercy from heaven to be able to chat about things I love and have her completely get it :')

We had two "real" missionary moments this week.

In a mini lesson with one of our teacher's friends from Chile, we learned that she was doing a lot of gospel study through group chats with other spanish speakers from around the world (Argentina, Peru, Spain, etc.). Hermana Selman had a foreign exchange friend last year from Spain that was interested in the church and Sofia (the lady we were teaching) said she could get her included in the group if we email her!

The fact that two girls in the US can talk to someone in Chile and find connections to help bring Christ to an interested person in Spain is a MAJOR testament that God truly is working through technology to bring people to the happiness of the gospel!

Our second cool experience happened with Andreina, who we have been teaching the past couple weeks. We showed her a video about the atonement of Christ and before we could comment on it, we realized she was crying. She said that the video made her think of some family struggles that she has been having.

Hermana Selman and I did our very best to comfort her with our simple testimonies in spanish and promised her that the Lord would help her feel peace.

It was really powerful to see someone overcome with the spirit and be able to speak to them as Christ would. One thing I have recognized as a missionary is that I have begun to see people as Christ sees them even more than I did in the past! I am always filled with LOVE!

This week I challenge you all to listen/watch general conference! What an awesome experience to be able to hear directly from God. I invite you to think of a question beforehand that you would like answered and listen sincerely to the words of the prophet and apostles.

Mormon 9:19 And if there were amiracles wrought then, why has God ceased to be a God of miracles and yet be an unchangeable Being? And behold, I say unto you he bchangeth not; if so he would cease to be God; and he ceaseth not to be God, and is a God of miracles.

I know that God wants to hear from us and answer our prayers today and forever! There are miracles all around us and His loving hand can be found in every aspect of our lives.

Have a wonderful week! :) I'd love to hear from you.

Ama siempre,

Hermana Smith <3
